Sarah Ferguson forced to sell £1.5m gift from Queen as she couldn't use it

Sarah, Duchess of York shared a close bond with her late mother-in-law. The Queen showed her love by buying Sarah and her two granddaughters a generous £1.5m gift - but they never got to use it

While they have been referred to as "the happiest divorced couple in the world" and still live together at Andrew's Royal Lodge home in Windsor, Fergie never fell out of the late monarch's favour - with the pair frequently spending time together, enjoying their many shared interests. After Sarah and Prince Andrew's divorce, the Queen bought Birch Hall, a seven-bedroom house in Surrey, for her granddaughters, who were seven and nine years old then, to live in with their mother and use when they grew up. She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: the most fantastic example of duty and service and steadfastness, and a constant steadying presence as our head of state for more than 70 years."
