1Love1Heart Buddy Holly and Sam Cooke wrote the foundations of what became pop music, and I idolised Jackie Wilson, the Who and all the other people I just mentioned, but I didn’t want to be a revival of something. A year later I was licking my wounds and a suit salesman in Beverly Hills told me his partner’s favourite song had been Billy Don’t Fall from Neither Fish nor Flesh. I didn’t realise they were ultimately looking for me to join the band, but I spent a week rehearsing to do justice to those amazing songs and had a white leather suit made for the occasion.
