Sammo Hung, Kurata Yasuaki Get Kick Out of Hong Kong Martial Arts Discussion in Tokyo: ‘Buy More Tickets, Buy the Whole Theater’

Kung fu ace Sammo Hung, Japanese star Kurata Yasuaki and action choreographer Tanigaki Kenji have a ball taking a trip down martial arts memory lane.

In a panel discussion held in the confines of TIFFCOM, the rights market aligned with the Tokyo International Film Festival, the three were seemingly selected to represent the past, present and future of the genre. These include “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” the action dram that this year broke box office record in Hong Kong, was selected as the territory’s Oscar contender and also plays in Tokyo. But Hung’s lonely training paid off, rapidly elevating Hong Kong cinema to a global stage and creating the condition for a ‘Golden Age” that lasted for more than two decades from the mid-1970s.
