Rufus Wainwright ‘Mortified’ by Donald Trump Playing His ‘Hallelujah’ Cover at Rally: ‘Height of Blasphemy’

Rufus Wainwright condemns Donald Trump for using his cover of 'Hallelujah' music at a presidential campaign rally.

During the event, Trump was meant to participate in a Q-and-A segment with his audience, but strangely, he didn’t do as much, instead choosing to throw a makeshift listening party as he stood on stage. Of course, I in no way condone this and was mortified, but the good in me hopes that perhaps in inhabiting and really listening to the lyrics of Cohen’s masterpiece, Donald Trump just might experience a hint of remorse over what he’s caused. Many musicians have issued similar statements or threatened to take legal action after Trump used their music — this list includes Jack White, Céline Dion, ABBA, Foo Fighters and the estate of Isaac Hayes, among others.
