Denmark will proclaim Crown Prince Frederik as the new King Frederik X in a ceremony today as Queen Margrethe becomes the first Danish monarch in 900 years to abdicate
Even though she is on record as sharing her belief that monarchy is a job for life, Queen Margrethe announced her shock abdication in her traditional New Year's Eve address. Having undergone an extensive back operation at the start of 2023, the popular Queen said: "The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future - whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation." On 14 January - 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father - I will step down as queen of Denmark.
