Marooned on an uninhabited island, he was stricken with food poisoning within hours and had to be whisked off to a hospital bed, where he spent the next two days with a drip in his arm. Voyaging up the Rio Negro, or Guainia, on a traditional river boat, he still showed his old tendency to pose at the prow like Kate Winslet in Titanic. The meeting of the waters, where the black Guainia flows into the milky brown Amazon, looked like a dish of olive oil and balsamic vinegar in a posh restaurant, he said.
