Robin Williams' Popeye was the most 'coked-up film set,' exec recalls: 'Everyone was stoned'

The Robin Williams-led 'Popeye' was 'most coked-up film set' he's ever visited recalls an exec. He claims 'everyone was stoned' on the set of the 1980 adaptation: 'You couldn't escape it.'

The comedy musical was one of numerous films that was produced in part by Paramount Pictures during Diller's 10-year tenure as the company's CEO from 1974 until 1984. Based on Elzie Crisler Segar's beloved comic strip, Popeye starred Williams as the titular spinach-loving seaman who travels to the town of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father. There, he meets Olive Oyl (Duvall), takes in a psychic child named Swee'Pea, and clashes with the town's violent manager, Captain Bluto (Paul L. Smith).
