Rickey Smiley speaks with PEOPLE about returning to the stage for his new comedy special and finding connection to his late son through his performance.
When the comedian's son Brandon died from an accidental overdose in January 2023, he entered a "life-changing" and "tough" era that has forever altered the way he lives his life. "That helps also, keeps you busy, keep your mind occupied, keep you from laying in bed, having thoughts and doing too much reflecting and too much crying or whatever," Smiley sys, but he admits that "the feeling" of grief is still the same. As he gets ready to release his newest comedy special, which is his first in almost a decade, Smiley explains that the wait is due to wanting to put his best material out there.
