Review: Anthony Hopkins is magnificent in ‘Freud’s Last Session’
Hopkins soars as an ailing Sigmund Freud in this film, which imagines a 1939 meeting between the father of psychoanalysis and Christian author C.S. Lewis.
There are air raid sirens, a radio address by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and an overall feeling of gloom, as Londoners pack the trains and head for the safety of the countryside. Both Goode and Lewis regard their older interlocutor with a mix of respect, affection and skepticism, as well as with a confident willingness to let a brilliant old showoff go into his dance. Photo: Sony Pictures ClassicsLewis, radiating a well-earned, philosophically arrived at peacefulness, is a Christian convert, who will go on to write “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Freud is an atheist, and a committed one, as he already has one foot and four toes in the grave.
