For years, DeGeneres appeared to be universally beloved by the famous guests who graced her stage, but Johnson’s 2019 interview was one of the first times the host’s kindness was tested so publicly. Its 13 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 26/100 Metacritic score were bad enough, but the film’s star Dakota Johnson’s own comments on the movie’s press tour didn’t exactly help matters. DeGeneres hit the road on a comedy tour in 2024 — even joking about being “kicked out of show business” — before moving across the pond to the Cotswolds in England with wife Portia de Rossi.
