Prince's 'Purple Rain' Movie Is Being Developed as a Broadway Musical
Prince's iconic 1984 Oscar winning 'Purple Rain' film is being adapted into a Broadway musical for its 40th anniversary
Set in Prince’s hometown, Minneapolis, Purple Rain told the fictional story of an aspiring guitarist named The Kid who escaped his troubled home life by playing with his band at the local First Avenue nightclub. In addition to Prince, the movie starred Apollonia Kotero as his love interest, Clarence E. Williams III as his abusive father, and his group, The Time, led by Morris Day. Keyboard player Lisa Coleman told The Guardian in 2017 that Prince surprised the band by telling them that the “ Purple Rain” song would be recorded for the album live at the show.
