Visiting the American capital this week, McGregor met Donald Trump in the White House on Saint Patrick’s Day, wearing an outfit that had the markings of a man after the president’s own heart: a three-piece pinstripe suit. At the Coach show, watched over by Kamala Harris’s stepdaughter Ella Emhoff, pinstripe was styled in the kind of high-low petri dish way younger generations tend to throw outfits together – over boxer short-style shorts with T-shirts grunged with scribbled messages. The lines are loaded, and McGregor knows it, having used pinstripe in the past to transmit a very direct message to his opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr: written into the stripes of a suit he wore pre-fight were the words “Fuck You”.
