People-Watching at The Metrograph Release Party
A night of chatter and popcorn-infused rum with Paul Schrader and company.
As I rounded the top of the Metrograph’s staircase into the Commissary, I saw him deep in conversation with New York filmmaker Onur Tukel, who was posing a question as to whether directors should write their own films (or writers direct their scripts) rather than splitting that work between two people. Though the party was dedicated to the first issue of the arty theater’s publication — a slick, well-designed magazine replete with big images and dense stories — the overarching theme felt holiday-ish. Contributors and filmmakers alike chatted: Alex Karpovsky lingered near Schrader; Owen Kline kept his jacket on; Joanna Arnow, who directed one of the year’s best films ( The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed), wove through the crowd by the bar.
