It is based on the real-life stories of U.S. drug trafficker Jung and his connections including narcotics kings Pablo Escobar and Carlos Lehder Rivas (portrayed in the film as Diego Delgado), and the Medellín Cartel. Depp played real-life criminal George Jung, who single-handedly became the world's premiere importer of cocaine from Colombia's Medellin cartel in the 1970s
