Paul Merson says addiction 'took everything away from him' as he  reveals the importance of Strictly Come Dancing in his recovery


The former footballer, 56, revealed that when he was in the grip of his addiction, the idea of competing in Strictly didn't even seem like a possibility but now he hopes he can inspire others.

The former Arsenal forward told the The Daily Mirror that at the height of his addiction he could only focus on drinking, drugs and gambling (pictured at Wembley in 1993) But despite his success on the pitch, Paul was battling demons and at the height of his career in the 1990s, his drinking, drug and gambling addictions spiralled out of control. Former England captain Tony Adams (pictured) also battled with addiction and took part in Strictly and gave Paul some sage advice
