With 13 nominations in total, almost tying the 14-nomination record, the film was set to be a major player in the Oscar race this year until unearthed posts made on X from lead actress Karla Sofia Gascón halted that momentum. The Substance took home a single craft Oscar, in the Makeup and Hairstyling category, amidst the recent controversy surrounding the film’s head of the hair department Frédérique Arguello revealing she was excluded from the nomination. The big winner of the night is Anora, which won the Oscar for Best Editing, as well as four other major categories including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Actress for Mikey Madison.
