Oscars 2025: Conclave writer scores first British win of the night in Adapted Screenplay category

British writer Peter Straughan scooped the UK's first Oscar win of the night on Sunday as he won in the Best Adapated Screenplay category.

The writer, 56, has also won the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice award in this category after previously being nominated for an Oscar for his 2011 adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. However, Cynthia will battle it out with Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) to take home the trophy. Gascón stars as the title character, a former Mexican drug lord who comes out as a transgender woman and fakes her own death in order to reinvent herself as a pro-social force, while Saldaña plays an ethically challenged lawyer who helps set up her new identity.
