Chris Columbus was originally going to direct "Christmas Vacation" but says it was impossible to work with Chevy Chase.

“Home Alone” director Chris Columbus said during an interview with Vanity Fair that it was ultimately Chevy Chase who opened the door for him to helm the 1990 Christmas comedy classic.
