The police statement about the holiday event came during an NYPD press conference this afternoon about this morning’s brazen shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The shooting, said NYPD police chief Jeffrey Maddrey, “will not affect the tree lighting.” The televised outdoor entertainment from Rockefeller Center kicks off at 7 p.m., with the tree-lighting itself scheduled for 9:55 p.m. The chief said additional officers will be stationed in nearby subways to safeguard the influx of users heading to and from the tree lighting.
