New York Times Inks Amazon AI Licensing Pact, Its First Such Deal


The New York Times Co. has reached a multiyear deal to license content to Amazon 'for AI-related uses.'

In 2023, the New York Times Co. sued OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging the tech companies illegally used millions of articles published by paper to train AI chatbots without compensation. New York Times Co. CEO Meredith Kopit Levien, in a memo to staffers Thursday, wrote that the Amazon deal “is consistent with our long-held principle that high-quality journalism is worth paying for. Last month, the Washington Post, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, entered into a “strategic partnership” with OpenAI to make the newspaper’s content “more accessible” in ChatGPT.
