Netflix Kills Its ‘Basic’ Plan (Again)
Prepare to pay up if you want a new ad-free account.
Basic-plan subscribers in Canada and the U.K. will be the first to lose access to their coveted subscription tier in Q2 of this year. The streamer will continue to phase out the Basic plan for the tier’s remaining subscribers in additional countries making up the company’s ad markets, so don’t be surprised if United States subscribers find themselves scrambling later this year. Netflix overall seems to have had a strong Q2: Its crackdown on password sharing led to a wave of new sign-ups, and analysts see its international content pipeline as relatively insulated from the two strikes that all but shut down the major Hollywood studios this summer.
