Netflix addresses Baby Reindeer controversy - and explains why they 'didn't want to anonymize' stalker

The successful Netflix series Baby Reindeer has come under scrutiny after fans took to social media to speculate on the real-life identities of characters in the dramatised show

Deadline has reported that Netflix senior public policy director Benjamin King told a parliament hearing in the UK that the company, and producer Clerkenwell Films “took every reasonable precaution in disguising the real-life identities of the people involved in that story.” However, John Nicolson, an MP for the Scottish National Party, pointed out Netflix’s duty of care had not been able to prevent the true identity of character Martha from being revealed online. Benjamin King has stated that Netflix aimed to balance protecting the identities of the real people with upholding the “veracity and authenticity” of Baby Reindeer. I personally wouldn’t be comfortable with a world in which we decided it was better that Richard was silenced and not allowed to tell the story.” He also said Netflix had worked with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the British charity that provides support for stalking victims.
