National Music Publishers Assn. Does Not Plan to Renew TikTok License — Will Indie Publishers Follow?

The standoff between TikTok and Universal took a turn when the National Music Publishers Assn., which reps many indies, said it does not plan to renew.

If more publishers join in — the two other major companies, Sony and Warner Chappell, have not yet done so — it would mean more music will vanish from the platform and more artists and songwriters will see their livelihoods impacted. In the letter — the full text of which appears below — the organization encourages its members to negotiate directly with TikTok if it wishes to continue to license their music on the platform; if not, it offers its services to “discuss enforcement options.” If circumstances change prior to the expiration of the current TikTok licenses, NMPA will promptly notify members.
