Morgan Freeman Gives Heartfelt Oscars Tribute to Gene Hackman: ‘I Lost a Dear Friend… A Man Whose Gifts Elevated Everyone’s Work’

Gene Hackman was honored at the Academy Awards by his 'Unforgiven' co-star Morgan Freeman: "Our community lost a giant. And I lost a dear friend."

The Oscars paid tribute to Gene Hackman during Sunday’s ceremony, with the actor’s “Unforgiven” co-star Morgan Freeman introducing an honor for the late star. The first came in 1972, for starring as the obsessive narcotics investigator Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in William Friedkin’s thriller “The French Connection.” The heralded turn cast Hackman’s trajectory as one of the defining American actors of the second half of the 20th century. In a press conference Friday, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza shared that both Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning.
