Mike ‘The Bodysnatcher’ McCallum, Legendary Jamaican Boxer, Dies Suddenly at Age 68 After Falling Ill While Driving

Mike McCallum, the legendary Jamaican boxer known as ‘The Bodysnatcher,’ died at age 68 in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 31, when he fell ill and pulled his car off the road while he was driving to the gym.

PEOPLE reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) for comment on Sunday, June 1, but did not receive an immediate response. McCallum — who was nicknamed “The Bodysnatcher” for his hard-hitting punches — was the first Jamaican to win the world title in 1984 when he defeated Sean Mannion of Ireland at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He was also a hall-of-fame fighter who held world titles in three different weight classes, and his career included a total of 55 fights, of which he won 49, lost five and tied one, per Boxing Undedfeated.
