Michael Caine at 91 — in his own words

From Alfie to Zulu, the actor reveals all in an exclusive extract from his new memoir

Paul Scofield won — but Alan Arkin, Steve McQueen and Richard Burton all lost out in my category too, so I was in good company! My friend Terry Stamp and I were having dinner at the Pickwick Club, and Harry Saltzman, a big-deal Canadian producer and co-producer of the James Bond films, sent a note to our table asking me to come over. When people said to me, “That was the worst film I’ve ever seen!” I’d say, “Probably, but it paid for a beautiful house for my mother, so what’s your problem?” As told to Matthew d’Ancona for Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over by Michael Caine, published on Thursday (Hodder & Stoughton £25).
