Met Office says 2025 will be one of hottest years on record

2024 is set to be the warmest year on record, beating the 1.5C warming threshold for the first time, the Met Office said, as it ranked 2025 among the hottest years

However, the El Nino phenomenon, a natural climate variation that releases heat from the tropical Pacific into the atmosphere, also contributed to the heightened global temperatures in 2023 and 2024. Despite the Pacific transitioning towards a cooler La Nina phase, 2025 is still forecasted to experience average global temperatures significantly higher than any recorded before 2023. The Met Office had previously indicated a possibility in its annual report last year that 2024 could witness average global temperatures surpassing 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
