Meshell Ndegeocello Delivers Powerful Meditations During Tiny Desk Performance

Meshell Ndegeocello performed songs from her upcoming James Baldwin-dedicated album alongside her classics during her NPR Tiny Desk concert.

On Tuesday, the musician visited NPR to perform songs from her upcoming August, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, along with some classics. Ndegeocello opened her Tiny Desk performance with “Travel,” where she played bass as vocalists Justin Hicks and Kenita Miller sang the track. “If I did not define myself for myself, I’d be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive,” she said, quoting Lorde and Baldwin as she closed her performance of the song.
