Melanie, ‘Brand New Key’ Folk Singer Who Played Woodstock, Dead at 76


Melanie, the chart-topping folk singer of "Brand New Key" who also performed at the Woodstock, has died at the age of 76.

Singer also scored hits with "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" and a rendition of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" over career that spanned six decades Melanie, the chart-topping folk singer of “Brand New Key” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” who also performed at the Woodstock festival in 1969, has died at the age of 76. Less than a year after the Astoria, Queens-born Safka released her 1968 debut album Born to Be, Melanie found herself onstage in front of hundreds of thousands of people at Woodstock.
