Mel Brooks Thought There Was “No Reason To Make ‘The Producers’ Into A Musical”


The hit show went on to win 12 Tony Awards after Brooks was persuaded by a persistent producer.

Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel co-starred in the 1967 movieEmbassy Pictures The musical adaptation of the film version of The Producers is one of Mel Brooks ’ greatest successes, but the veteran comedian has revealed it nearly didn’t happen. The outrageous plot follows failing impresario Max Bialystock who plans to stage a Broadway flop and collect on investors’ money. The show has been seen around the world and is about to be staged at London’s Garrick Theatre, where Brooks previously enjoyed success with the musical comedy Young Frankenstein.
