Maya Hawke Says Some Producers Cast Based on ‘Collective’ Instagram Followers

Maya Hawke said in a new interview that Instagram follower counts matter to some producers, influencing whether or not a film will be made.

Maya Hawke discussed the blurring lines between being an actor and how celebrity and social media plays a factor in the mix during a recent Happy Sad Confused podcast. The Stranger Things actress added that several “smart directors” have dealt with producers who require a certain number of Instagram followers from their cast before they will go forward with the film. Hawke will reprise her role as Robin Buckley for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things when it returns to Netflix this year.
