Matthew McConaughey Says His Dad's Death Was 'the Biggest Moment of Becoming Man': The 'Safety Net' Was 'Gone'

Matthew McConaughey and his 'Mud' costar Jacob Lofland reflected on each of their fathers' deaths in a new interview, where McConaughey said his dad James' death in 1992 "kind of gave me a kick in the caboose to have courage."

McConaughey has spoken about his father in the past, including during a 2023 appearance on Lex Fridman's podcast in which he said he still misses James. "I've based parts of all kinds of characters I've played and the man that I am on people that he introduced me to and who he was," he said at the time. In that 2023 interview, McConaughey noted that his father died five days after he began working on 1993's Dazed and Confused, his first big screen project.
