My problem with that story is it overlooked Apple’s overall strategy: whether Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon or others made back their production budgets and P&A in global theatrical releases, their theater runs were meant to create cultural zeitgeist awareness missing in most straight-to-streaming films. Apple’s Wolfs move – remember that Clooney revealed to Deadline he and Pitt took less money to make possible a theatrical release – came because of the shrapnel that studio chiefs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg got for betting wrong that Fly Me to the Moon would work in theaters.
