Marvel rewrites Israeli character in latest Captain America film after years of controversy

The comic book character has caused backlash before.

When Emmy nominee Haas – who found fame in the Netflix series Unorthodox – was first announced as joining the MCU in 2022, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel slammed the ‘ugly racism and valorisation of Mossad’ in the original comic as ‘sickening’. Haas, 29, is herself an Israeli actress who, while medically exempt from mandatory conscription with the Israel Defence Force, did serve a short period of voluntary service with its performance theatre unit. Some fans have been calling for Captain America: Brave New World to be boycotted due to the inclusion of Ruth Bat-Seraph while not realising the changes that have been made, as others have denounced the film for making the changes in the first place, which they feel strips the character of her identity.
