Mariska Hargitay on Making Olivia Benson a TV Icon, Dick Wolf’s ‘Tough Love’ and Fighting to Bring Kelli Giddish Back to ‘SVU’
Mariska Hargitay, who has made Olivia Benson an icon after 25 years of "Law & Order: SVU," has also become an advocate for women on set.

In 1999, the year that Mariska Hargitay landed the role of sex-crimes detective Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: SVU,” she learned that one in three women is a survivor of sexual abuse. “Her decades of steadfast advocacy on behalf of survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse has truly changed how we all talk about these crimes,” says executive director Robyn Mazur of Hargitay’s hands-on work with the foundation for the past 20 years.
