When chef Marcus Wareing visited a school in the south of France to help out in the canteen, on his foodie travel show Simply Provence, not one of the youngsters appeared to be overweight.
Almost a quarter of children aged 10 and 11 in British primary schools are clinically obese, according to the latest NHS data — and for pupils in the poorest areas, that figure rises above 30 per cent. Yet when chef Marcus Wareing visited a school in the south of France to help out in the canteen, on his foodie travel show Simply Provence, not one of the youngsters appeared to be overweight. There isn’t room for the full story here (it was approximately the length of a novella) but it involved fruit-picking, a chest freezer, puree, catering school and a long-running family joke.
