Manrique Cortés Castro’s ‘Monsters’ Lines Up Co-Production Agreement With Catalonia’s Playlab Films (EXCLUSIVE)
Manrique Cortés Castro’s directorial debut 'Monsters,' about trauma and masculinity, finds co-production partner in Catalonia's Playlab Films.
Speaking with Variety, Castro says that the film is “inspired by my personal story, but it is not my story.” “First, a crisis of loss: despite the years that have passed, Pablo still carries the emotional weight of losing his father at a very young age in a tragic event. In his director’s statement, Castro describes “Monsters” as “an intimate and naturalistic character-driven film, with magical or even surreal escapades, where dreams and memory intermingle to discover a vulnerable character without judgment.” Despite “Monsters” being Castro’s feature debut, the filmmaker has worked on several other high profile projects, including post-production for Neto Villalobos’s “All About the Feathers,” Sudasassi’s ‘The Awakening of the Ants” and César Caro’s “ The Bird of Fire,” as well as directing short films “Cleo & Nina” and “It Is Love.”
