Louis Gossett Jr's cause of death revealed: Oscar-winning actor died from chronic lung disease aged 87 amid years-long health battle

Louis Gossett Jr died from a chronic lung condition aged 87 last month.

Known for his athletic build and dominating presence on stage and screen, Gossett Jr starred in a number of demanding roles including his Oscar-winning turn as drill sergeant Emil Foley in Officer And A Gentleman in 1982. Before he became a firm favorite in Hollywood circles, he was known to be friendly with James Dean and studied acting with Marilyn Monroe, Martin Landau and Steve McQueen at an offshoot of the Actors Studio taught by Frank Silvera. In August 1969, Gossett had a bizarre near-brush with convicted killer and cult-leader Charles Manson, after he was invited to actress Sharon Tate's home while partying with members of the band Mamas and the Papas.
