Lost 1980s Indie Rock Pioneers Salem 66 Are Getting Their Moment in the Sun

Salem 66 — 'one of the only women-led bands' in the 1980s indie rock scene of Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies — are getting a new compilation.

They shared a label with Sonic Youth, a recording studio with the Pixies, a club stage with Dinosaur Jr., and frequent record-review comparisons with R.E.M. They recorded their fourth album at Fort Apache Studios in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with producers Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie (soon to be famous for their work with Radiohead, Hole, and Uncle Tupelo). While the clips are full of praise for Salem 66’s original sound, there’s also more than a whiff of dismissive sexist attitudes and backhanded compliments in some of them.
