Liza Minnelli Was 'Truly Devastated' When She Found First Husband 'In a Compromising Situation with Another Man'

Liza Minnelli and her closest friends discuss her loves and four marriages — including her first one, to Peter Allen, who she discovered was gay — in the new documentary 'Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story'.

Liza Minnelli has been married and divorced four times, and according to at least one of her closest friends, the first cut — her marriage to the late Australian entertainer Peter Allen — was the deepest. "The happiest I saw her with somebody in her private life was with Peter Allen," Mia Farrow, 79, says in the new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, which premiered in June at the Tribeca Film Festival and opens in select theaters on Jan. 24. The documentary also covers Minnelli's marriages to Mark Gero (1979–1992) and her much-publicized 2002 wedding and eventual split from fourth husband David Gest, who died in 2016.
