Later, a weakened Van, along with Tai and Misty (Christina Ricci) go in search of Shauna ( Melanie Lynskey), and find Melissa ( Hilary Swank) — who they thought was dead — on the side of the road. Melissa offers to be her sacrifice, “If the wilderness is telling you to put that knife through my heart so you survive your cancer, then do it.” Van doesn’t kill her, because she isn’t that person. This younger version, this open, bright light, throughout the whole episode, is incredibly annoying to older Van, with her stories and “The Goonies.” We tried to really lean into that, to then have there be a real big shift in that last scene.
