Larry Tamblyn, Co-Founder of Garage-Rock Band the Standells and Brother of Russ Tamblyn, Dies at 82

Larry Tamblyn, who co-founded the 1960s group the Standells ('Dirty Water') and was the brother of actor Russ Tamblyn, died at age 82.

The song’s endurance over the decades has been credited first to its inclusion on the influential “Nuggets” compilation album of garage-rock and psychedelic pop from the 1960s, and then to its adoption by Boston sports teams, played when the Red Sox, Celtics or Bruins win a home game. It’s probably one of the most famous ‘Munsters’ episodes ever and we played ourselves and we got more notoriety from that show than ‘Dirty Water,’ ’cause it’s just constantly coming up… A lot of comments were made about the fact that we did ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ but that was their decision, not ours.” Producer Ed Cobb brought in the song “Dirty Water” and got sole writing credit for it, although Tamblyn noted that key uncredited contributions included Valentino coming up with the signature guitar part and Dodd improvising many of the lyrics.
