Lance Bass Reveals CW Scrapped Sitcom Pilot After He Came Out

Lance Bass says a sitcom pilot with CW was scrapped in 2006 after he came out as gay. Casting directors worried he couldn't play straight characters.

In this image released on October 6, 2024, Lance Bass arrives at the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special at LA Center Studios in Los Angeles, California. But when the news broke, the singer shared on a recent appearance on the podcast Politickin, certain opportunities started slipping away — including the show. Bass appeared on the cover of People in July 2006, with a tagline that read: “I’m Gay.” The singer went straight to the press when he thought hovering paparazzi would feed into the speculation about his sexuality, which could have led to him being outed.
