King Charles opens door to Balmoral Castle for first time ever ahead of summer break


The King is renowned for his specific tastes in interior design - and these will be on display when the doors to the Royal Family's much-loved retreat at Balmoral Castle are thrown open to the public for the first time in its history. King Charles will be allowing visitors to step inside the Scottish retreat in Royal Deeside - where Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022 - allowing them a glimpse of Royal Family's private life in the Highlands.

The King is renowned for his specific tastes in interior design - and these will be on display when the doors to the Royal Family's much-loved retreat at Balmoral Castle are thrown open to the public for the first time in its history. From Monday, 1 July, visitors can take a guided tour of a number of rooms in the Aberdeenshire castle, where successive monarchs since Queen Victoria have been able to relax and recharge amongst local Scots who have treated them as their own. Quirky items on display include the chauffeur’s whistle, used in past years to call the driver, which can be seen in the red corridor, decorated with printed flock wallpaper commissioned by Victoria from arts and crafts pioneer William Morris.
