Kelvin Kiptum, Marathon World Record Holder, Dead at 24
The 24-year old, who set the world marathon record last October, was killed in a car accident in southwest Kenya.
According to The Guardian, authorities said that Kiptum lost control of his vehicle at approximately 11 p.m. local time, colliding with a tree before ultimately ending up in a ditch. "We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana," World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said in a statement. "It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where Kelvin set his extraordinary marathon world record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time.
