KATIE HIND: Why smitten ITV bosses think they have found the next Holly Willoughby
My memory of meeting Holly all those years ago came rushing back on Monday this week, when I switched on my TV - and did a double-take. Sian Welby had stepped into Holly's LK Bennett shoes.
This more informal style perhaps explains why, when we met in the queue for the ladies’ at the now-defunct V music festival in Chelmsford, Essex, Holly was surprisingly candid: she revealed she’d ‘almost fainted’ when she was offered the chance to present Britain’s most high-profile breakfast show alongside veteran broadcaster Phillip Schofield. In her approachable Midlands accent, Sian – who looks much younger than her 37 years – shared a deeply personal story about her father who lives with dementia, while co-host Dermot O’Leary (a huge fan, I’m told) watched on proudly. Although ITV bosses appreciate O’Leary as a seasoned presenter for Friday’s show, I’m told they hope to sign Ben Shephard to sit in the more coveted Monday-Thursday slot once occupied by the disgraced Schofield.
