UK writer Kathryn Flett reviews Wilderness With Simon Reeve, which airs on Sundays on BBC2, and Paramount +'s Sexy Beast, a TV series prequel to the 2000 film.
Watching him traipse (with his guide, Congolese conservationist Adams) for days through central Africa’s rainforests in search of the Baka (nomadic communities that were in less enlightened times described as ‘pygmies’), I found myself reaching for large glasses of iced water to combat my own sudden dehydration. His reward, eventually, was being welcomed by a village of 100 or so kindly folk, where gender roles are clearly defined: women build all the beautiful watertight bell tent-style shelters (and do everything else ‘at home’) while the men hunt for food. The acclaimed 2000 movie Sexy Beast saw ex-crim Gal (Ray Winstone) comfortably relocated to the Costa del Crime with wife DeeDee (Amanda Redman), only to be persuaded out of retirement by his terrifying former ‘colleague’ Don.
