KATHRYN FLETT'S My TV Week: Now that's what I call a cold case
UK writer Kathryn Flett reviews True Detective: Night Country, starring Jodie Foster and created, written and directed by the award-winning Issa Lopez, along with the Gladiators reboot on BBC1.
Elsewhere (although threatening to collide with the rest of the narrative at any moment), there’s a ‘cold case’ investigation that looks likely to redefine the description; arguably, in the entire history of TV thrillers, there may never have been an unsolved murder colder than the death of poor ‘Annie K’, with which Navarro is clearly obsessed. It’s a fun-sponge’s approach to getting through a miserable month; with a post-Christmas fiscal squeeze all but inevitable and spring feeling light years away, I’d rather rack up red wine, dive into pies and wait until leaves are on trees and there’s more than half a dozen hours of daylight before attempting to uncover the ‘New Me’. In the meantime, there’s the reboot of the 1990s sports-entertainment megashow Gladiators, with obligatory shouty voiceover (‘CONTENDERS, READY!’), events with names such as Collision and The Eliminator, and an audience that appear to have mainlined full-fat Coca-Cola to sound exactly like a supersized USA-style crowd.
