Karla Sofía Gascón Makes BAFTA History By Becoming First Openly Trans Actress To Be Nominated For Film Award
Karla Sofía Gascón has made BAFTA history by becoming the first transgender actress to be nominated for a film award.
The Spanish performer has been recognized in the Leading Actress category for her role in Emilia Pérez, in which she stars as a Mexican drug kingpin who transitions into a woman. Gascón will compete for the BAFTA prize alongside five other nominees: Saoirse Ronan ( The Outrun), Demi Moore ( The Substance), Mikey Madison ( Anora), Marianne Jean-Baptiste ( Hard Truths), Cynthia Erivo ( Wicked). Gascón got a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, but lost out on the prize to Moore.
