Jussie Smollett's Conviction for 2019 Alleged Hoax Overturned in Appeal


Jussie Smollett’s conviction for allegedly orchestrating an attack on himself in 2019 was overturned on Thursday, November 21

“Today we resolve a question about the State’s responsibility to honor the agreements it makes with defendants,” Justice Elizabeth Rochford wrote in the ruling. Empire creator Lee Daniels isn’t ruling out working with Jussie Smollett after his shocking involvement in a hate crime hoax — but the former collaborators still aren’t on great terms. Smollett’s defense attorneys argued that the 2021 trial violated his Fifth Amendment protections against double jeopardy since the charges were initially dropped in 2019 ahead of the indictment.
